National-Level Multi-Stakeholder Platform Consultation and Validation Workshop Strengthens Green Tea Value Chain Development
The Building Resilience Commercial Smallholder Agriculture (BRECSA) Project successfully organized a two-day National-Level Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP) Consultation and Validation Workshop for Strengthening the Green Tea Value Chain from 29–30 May 2026 at Hotel Nordenma, Olakha, Thimphu.
The workshop was conducted to validate the findings of the Green Tea Market and Production Potential Assessment and to build consensus among stakeholders on strategic interventions required to promote Green Tea as a commercially viable value chain commodity in Bhutan, particularly in Trongsa Dzongkhag.
The event brought together 20 participants, including representatives from government agencies, development partners, private sector organizations, producer groups, processors, traders, extension personnel, Sanam Jabchorpas (SJs), and support agencies. Participants included representatives from the Department of Agriculture Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC), Department of Agriculture (DoA), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), World Food Programme (WFP), Cottage and Small Industries (CSI), Trade Division, and the BRECSA Project Management Unit (PMU).
During the workshop, participants reviewed and validated the findings of the market and production potential assessment, confirming the strong potential for green tea production and commercialization in Trongsa Dzongkhag. Discussions focused on identifying key policy, technical, and market-related challenges affecting the value chain and exploring opportunities for market expansion and private sector engagement.
A key achievement of the workshop was the formalization of a national-level Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP) for Green Tea, providing a structured mechanism for collaboration, coordination, and collective decision-making among stakeholders across the value chain. Participants also identified and mapped the roles of producers, processors, traders, extension workers, Sanam Jabchorpas, Cottage and Small Industries, and supporting agencies to strengthen value chain coordination.
The workshop further initiated the development of a Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) for Green Tea, with stakeholders jointly outlining priority interventions, responsibilities, and indicative investment requirements. Key recommendations included strengthening product certification, improving branding and packaging, promoting good agricultural and processing practices, and enhancing market linkages to increase competitiveness and value addition.
The consultation highlighted the importance of adopting a market-oriented approach to production, reinforcing the principle of “production for market” to ensure sustainability, profitability, and long-term growth of the Green Tea sector.
The outcomes of the workshop will guide future investments and collaborative actions aimed at transforming Green Tea into a resilient, inclusive, and commercially sustainable value chain under the BRECSA Project.
