Multi-stakeholders Platform (MSP) for mushroom industry in Sarpang.

“A MSP is a process in which diverse actors (producer organizations, aggregators, processors, wholesalers and service providers) collaborate to achieve a common goal.” MSP is fundamentally about participatory information sharing, decision-making and engaging in win-win business along the value chain. The actors involved must understand and commit to their roles and responsibilities to ensure success of the industry as an entirety.
After two days of discussion, deliberation, and intercession on 25th and 26 September 2025, finally we have formalized a Dzongkhag level MSP for mushroom industry in Sarpang. The spawn suppliers, producers, processors, marketing agents, and service providers congregated to establish the MSP. Indeed, could possibly be the first-ever formal MSP to promote mushroom as an economically viable and sustainable business.
The shared vision of the MSP is to make 99 HHs of Sarpang famers richer on average by Nu. 420,222.20, through production of 152.40 MT of mushroom annually by 2030. The industry is expected to contribute 32% of mushroom production target of 13th FYP of the MoAL. Oyster and Shiitake will be the major varieties of mushroom to be cultivated. Nonetheless, in few pockets button mushroom will be also tried for first time.
The stakeholders and their concurred roles and responsibilities are specified in the new mushroom value chain map.

The Sarpang mushroom MSP consists of 15 members with representations from input suppliers, producers, processors, traders, and Government agencies.

The MSP will held general meeting at least twice in the year but during the emergencies, the office bearers can call for adhoc meetings. The MSP general meeting will be held 50% in the field and other 50% in the Gelephu. Simple majority will be applied for any decision making.
The President, General Secretary, Treasurer, and the Observer of the MSP are elected through secret ballot ensure fair election. The office bearers are elected for one year but upon the approval by the executive board members, the tenure can be extended by another year.

Any issues pertaining to mushroom value chain shall be discussed and deliberated in the MSP and appropriate common solution should be unearth through participatory dialogue and communication. Even the price negotiation and legal agreements between various actors should be drawn in the MSP. The first MSP general assembly is to hold within second week of November 2025 in Gelephu where ToR for office bearers and detailed action plan for mushroom industry will be developed.
A total of 396 people (238 female, 158 male) is expected to benefit from the mushroom industry of Sarpang Dzongkhag. The industry is also expected to engage 119 youths and 15 people with disability of Sarpang.
