Empowering Farmers with Smart Agriculture and Livestock Training under BRECSA project

Over the past week, farmers across Chhudzom Gewog (Sarpang), Drakteng Gewog (Trongsa), Bjoka Gewog (Zhemgang), and Tsirangtoe Gewog (Tsirang) benefited from an innovative training initiative under the Building Resilient Commercial Smallholder Agriculture (BRECSA) program. The training was successfully conducted by the Tarayana Foundation, an implementing partner of WFP Bhutan for the BRECSA project, equipping farmers with modern techniques in smart agriculture, smart livestock management, and mushroom cultivation.

Smart Agriculture: Farmers received hands-on training in sustainable practices, including vermi compost production, natural pesticide application, root treatments, seed banking, polyhouse and orchard management, biochar preparation, and sustainable land management. These methods aim to enhance productivity while protecting the environment.

Smart Livestock: The livestock-focused training guided farmers in natural manure production, liquid fertiliser preparation, organic pesticide application, and cow dung/waste management, promoting healthier livestock and more sustainable farming practices.

Mushroom Cultivation: Recognising the potential for income diversification and food security, farmers were trained in mushroom cultivation techniques, adding a new dimension to their agricultural activities.

Through these trainings, the BRECSA program continues to empower farmers with knowledge and skills to adopt innovative agricultural practices, strengthen resilience, and improve livelihoods across Bhutan.
