Enhancing Agri-Food Export through the Bhutan counter in Guwahati

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MoAL) places high priority on enhancing the export of agri-food products, both in terms of value and volume. In line with this goal, the Regional Agricultural Marketing and Cooperative (RAMCO), Gelephu under DAMC, has established an outlet for Bhutanese products within the NEDFi Haatin Guwahati, India. It is in pursuit of development goal of BRECSA i.e catalyze a 30% increase in resilient commercial agricultural production and improve food and nutrition security in the four target districts by 2030. The overarching objective of the outlet is to enhance Bhutan’s export trade of agri-food products.

Specific objectives of the Bhutan Outlet include:

  1. To enhance market access for Bhutanese agri-food products, handicrafts, and textiles.
  2. To promote Bhutanese products among high-end consumers in Guwahati and other major Indian cities.
  3. To foster and strengthen institutional linkages and trade relations between Bhutan and India.

The Bhutan Counter was inaugurated on 23rd June 2025 at NEDFi Haat, located on Rupnath Brahma Path, Rupnagar, Guwahati, Assam. NEDFi Haat serves as a marketing platform for products developed by the Northeast Society for Handicraft Incubation and Livelihood Promotion (NE-SHILP). A dedicated space within the Haat has been allocated to showcase and sell Bhutanese products.

The opening ceremony was graced jointly by Mr. Jigme Thinlye Namgyal, Consul General of the Royal Bhutanese Consulate General in Guwahati and Mr. Ramheu Zeliang, General Manager of NEDFi. The event is also attended by Mr. Tashi Dorji, Director of DAMC, MoAL, Thimphu and officials from RAMCO officials.

The outlet will be managed by NEDFi Haat and operated by NE-SHILP. The Bhutan Cooperatives (B-COOPs) Shop, Gelephu is a counterpart agency from Bhutan, responsible for the collection and supply of products to the NEDFi Haat. To start with we have collected and displayed 51 agri-food products, handicrafts and textiles certified by BFDA. A total of 40 people (10 female, 30 male) attended the opening ceremony of the Bhutan counter.

The establishment of Bhutan Counter is financially supported by BRECSA and EU projects of MoAL.
