The Social, Environmental and Climate Assessment concludes

The SECAP on Piggery and Coffee concluded last Friday

The Social, Environmental, and Climate Assessment for the inclusion of Coffee and Piggery as prioritised commodities under the BRECSA project financing was completed successfully last Friday.

BRECSA project has six prioritised commodities, namely, dairy, poultry, vegetables, mushroom, turmeric and ginger for commercialisation and value chain development in the four project landscape Dzongkhags over a project period. However, given the repeated request from implementing partners to include coffee and piggery as new commodities under BRECSA project, the recent Supervision Mission which took place from 8th to 14th March 2025 has recommended the project to earnestly undertake the detailed assessment of the impact of introducing coffee and piggery on social, environmental, and climate parameters.

The main objective of the assessment is to ensure adherence to IFAD’s social, environmental, and climate safeguards and to evaluate potential risks associated with the introduction of the two new commodities.

Accordingly, a team from the PMU visited all four target Dzongkhags, held a stakeholder consultation involving key sector officials, and conducted a holistic assessment in accordance with IFAD’s SECAP’s matrix and screening checklist. Additionally, the team made a field visit to selected gewogs to validate the findings of stakeholder consultation.
